Pruett denies involvement in NCAA violations
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Former Marshall football coach Bob Pruett has denied allegations he was involved in an academic scandal and a jobs program for athletes that drew NCAA violations in 2001. Pruett refuted the claims in a sworn deposition he gave in May in a lawsuit filed by David Ridpath, Marshall's former NCAA compliance officer.

Jamaica's Bolt breaks 200 mark, gets sprint double
BEIJING (AP) - Usain Bolt of Jamaica broke the world record by winning the 200 meters in 19.30 seconds Wednesday night, becoming the first man since Carl Lewis in 1984 to sweep the 100 and 200 gold medals at an Olympics. Bolt is the first man ever to break the world marks in both sprints at an Olympics. Not even Lewis or Jesse Owens managed that.

NASCAR hands out penalties, suspensions to Gibbs
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - NASCAR has stripped Joe Gibbs Racing drivers Tony Stewart and Joey Logano of 150 points each and their crew chiefs were suspended indefinitely Wednesday for cheating during Saturday's Nationwide Series race. Crew chiefs Jason Ratcliff and Dave Rogers were also fined $50,000 each, and five other crew members were suspended indefinitely.
